Paroxysmus on the 16th/17th and 23rd November
This tour
in the Parox * -
lottery in 2013 was quite different from the
last frustration tour which happened only virtually at
our monitors. This time we were absolutely in place.
However, on the return flight on 23 November, the
trickiest question of all had to be asked directly at
the check -in desk at the airport of Catania. The
choices ranged from the local live- observation or a
place on the plane to Munich. But in the moment of the
check –in, Etna was twinkling to us directly through
the large glass window of the terminal with an ash
cloud, and the strong development of the eruption
could be well observed. So we decided literally in the
last second to drive again to the volcano while
canceling the home flight. Up again on the highway! As
usual ... the normal madness.

This parox did developed very slowly but…
...lava fountains and big bubbles
During the
long
lasting eruption of Mount Etna overnight, lava
bubbles were shared out in a perfect symmetry. Here we
speak not of a few hundred meters, but
rather than of ONE KILOMETER in diameter! The estimation I derive from it the
instantaneous height of the New-South-East cone of about
300m. While taking our position in the range of 1.5 kilometers
from the base of the cone
I say,
oha a quite imposing and
impressive natural spectacle! :-)

show the large-scale sharing out of lava bombs on the
New South East Crater
Ash rain in direction NO. The volcano in the fisheye
objective.
The steam
and ash cloud is heading towards the north-east lain
coastal towns. The inhabitants of Taormina and Giarre
are probably grumbling again by swinging the broom to
an athletic ash removal. At least ash rain went after
the paroxysm on 23 November in this region down.

COMET ISON
BRAKE...
The comet
could be observed hardly with the naked eye, and is
positioned in the middle picture over the city of Giarre
at base of Mt.Etna. Unfortunately we missed the
telescope and tracking. So we could only expose for a
short time with the 300mm telelens to represent the
comet still 'reasonably'.
And further on: The announce of the new
paroxysm at the 23rd of November
Because of
the severe storms in the Mediterranean, shipping to
Stromboli was exposed and so we dealt during the quiet
week with swimming courses at wind force 5 and the
repeated visit of the Alcantara Gorge. So in the
evening on the 22nd November Martin and I stared bored
to the NSEC, and we thought it would be better the
pock will not show more Strombolians, because our
flight leaves tomorrow morning. Well, the reply came
promptly, and at dusk the first Strombolian ejecta was
already to see. Thanks Etna, doesn’t it gets an
evening earlier!
The
paroxysm developed mightily and appears extremely
dynamic and energetic. This time, we got the impression
that the volcano literally pulverized the emerging lava.
Red lava fountains could not be observed. We could
actually observe an ascending compact lapilli column in
the dimension of estimated 1-1.5 kilometers above the
summit area. (Story to the photos, above).

Here
you can see the different time lines of both paroxysm.
The activity of the Parox at the 23nd Nov. took a short
time and ended with a
peak
abruptly. Instead, the activity of the 17th seems like an
elephant back.
